Case Study - Chimney Reduction in Tonbridge

Project Overview

PSE Roofing were appointed to carry out chimney reduction works and associated roof repairs at the property. The existing chimney stack was no longer required above roof level and required safe removal to eliminate ongoing maintenance concerns while ensuring the roof covering remained fully weatherproof.

The project involved reducing the chimney stack to roof level and carrying out localised roofing works to seamlessly reinstate the affected roof area using matching materials.

Scope of Works

Erection of scaffolding to provide safe access to the work area. Careful dismantling and removal of the chimney stack down to roof level. Opening up the surrounding roof area to facilitate repair works. Installation of new breathable roofing membrane to the affected section of roof. Installation of new pressure-treated roofing battens.

Reinstatement of the roof covering using like-for-like roof tiles to match the existing roof. Making good all disturbed areas and ensuring a weatherproof finish. Removal of waste materials and completion of final site inspection.

Challenges

Safely removing the chimney structure without causing damage to the surrounding roof covering. Integrating new roofing materials with the existing roof construction. Achieving a seamless repair that matched the appearance of the existing roof. Maintaining weather protection throughout the duration of the works.

Solution

Scaffolding was erected to provide safe access for operatives and materials. The chimney stack was carefully dismantled and reduced to roof level, with all debris safely removed from site. Following removal of the chimney, a section of the roof was opened up to allow for the installation of new breathable membrane and pressure-treated battens. The roof covering was then reinstated using like-for-like tiles, ensuring the repaired area blended with the existing roof and maintained the property's appearance.

Outcome

All works were completed in accordance with good roofing practice, resulting in a secure, weatherproof roof and the successful removal of the redundant chimney structure.
