Case Study - Cold Applied Liquid Roofing System Installation in Tunbridge Wells
Location: 185 Forest Road, Tunbridge Wells TN2 5JA
Project Overview
PSE Roofing was appointed to install a new cold-applied liquid roofing system to a flat roof requiring a durable, seamless waterproof finish. The existing roof structure was prepared to receive a new decking system before the application of a reinforced liquid waterproofing membrane designed to provide long-term protection against water ingress.
The project focused on delivering a high-quality cold roof installation using industry-recognised installation methods and premium materials to ensure lasting performance.
Scope of Works
Erection of safe access equipment where required. Preparation of the existing roof ready for the new roofing system. Installation of new 18mm OSB roof decking. Formation of 2mm expansion gaps between all OSB boards to accommodate natural movement.Application of a 1mm liquid detailing coat to all board joints and connection points.
Installation of reinforcing matting over all treated joints. Rolling of reinforcing matting to eliminate trapped air and ensure full adhesion. Application of a two-coat liquid waterproofing system across the entire roof area. Installation of all perimeter trims, edge details and termination trims required to complete the system. Final inspection and site clearance.
Challenges
Providing a completely seamless waterproof membrane across the roof area. Correctly detailing all board joints to accommodate thermal movement. Ensuring reinforcement matting was fully bonded without air pockets.
Achieving an even application of the liquid roofing system across the entire roof. Producing a neat, durable finish around all roof edges and terminations.
Solution
The roof was prepared before installing new 18mm OSB decking, ensuring 2mm expansion gaps were maintained between each board to allow for natural expansion and contraction. A 1mm liquid detailing coat was then applied over all board joints and critical junctions.
Reinforcing matting was embedded into the wet coating and carefully rolled to remove any trapped air, ensuring complete adhesion and strengthening of the joint details.
Following completion of the reinforcement stage, a two-layer cold-applied liquid waterproofing system was installed over the entire roof surface, creating a seamless, fully bonded waterproof membrane. All perimeter trims and edge details were installed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation guidance, providing a robust and professional finish.
Outcome
The completed roof now benefits from a durable, low-maintenance waterproofing system designed to provide long-term weather protection and excellent performance.
